Madison Mountaineering K2 Updates!

Updates from the Madison Mountaineering Team on the World’s second highest mountain, the mighty K2.

We are thrilled to announce that the Madison Mountaineering K2 expedition team has reached the summit of the world’s second-highest peak, putting all boots on top for those who left base camp on the summit rotation! We are so proud of our entire team for all of their hard work. It’s been a challenging season with tough weather that all came together for a beautiful summit day with epic views all around as far as the eye can see. The team gathered at the summit together and shared hugs and high-fives, taking in the moment and the huge feeling of accomplishment. K2 Update: settled into Camp 3

Climbers encounter several cruxes when ascending K2’s Abruzzi Ridge. Technical climbing at altitude, House’s Chimney, and the Black Pyramid to name a few… The Black Pyramid stands between Camp 2 and Camp 3 – a steep face of rock that separates the two camps.

Today, the team made strong work in this section, moving well on their way to their next camp. With another good day of climbing under their belt, the team has crawled into their sleeping bags for the night with plans to continue their climb tomorrow!

It also comes with great pleasure to share that the Madison Mountaineering Broad Peak expedition team has successfully reached the summit, standing atop the world’s 12th-highest peak! The team gathered together on the summit and shared hugs and high-fives before starting their descent.

K2: Camp 1 to Camp 2

The team ascended above Camp 1 today, climbing through mixed-terrain on their way to Camp 2 where they’ve settled in for the night. House’s Chimney, a famous ~100-foot section of technical rock separates Camp 1 from Camp 2 – another challenging section for climbers at over 20,000 feet above sea level!

The team is moving well and is in good spirits on their ascent of the world’s second-highest peak!

The climb to Camp 1

K2 rises up from the valley floor, steep from top to bottom. The team spent one night in advanced base camp before climbing to Camp 1 at 6065m / 19,900ft. After a great day on the mountain, the team has crawled into their tents for the night, excited to continue up the mountain tomorrow!

Advanced Base Camp to Camp 1: 762m / 2,500ft of elevation gain.

Our summit rotation on K2 is about to begin!

Over the last month, the team has gone from Islamabad to K2 Base Camp, high on the Unclimbed Peak, and to Camp 2 on K2. Acclimatization which is crucial to success at high altitudes along with technical training is done, and it’s time to head up the mountain! The team is psyched and ready to go.

K2 is a magnificent peak – one that can inspire awe and excitement in even the most seasoned climbers.

“Immediately you understand the obsession, the difficulty, and the relentless efforts of years past to climb this unbelievable mountain.” ~ Benny Lieber
