Hari Budha Magar Begins Final Seven Summits Push in Antarctica

Gurkha veteran Hari Budha Magar has arrived in Antarctica as he prepares to take on the final climb of his Seven Summits challenge — Mount Vinson.

The Canterbury-based former soldier made history in 2023 as the first above-the-knee double amputee to summit Mount Everest. Now, with six continental high points already conquered, the 4,892m ascent of Vinson stands between him and completing the full set.

Magar lost both legs 15 years ago while serving in Afghanistan, but disability has never slowed his ambition. He has already scaled peaks including Kilimanjaro and Mount Elbrus, with his Seven Summits journey beginning on Mont Blanc in August 2019.

The Antarctic climb presents a unique set of dangers. Temperatures can plunge below -40°C, and Magar relies heavily on his hands to climb — increasing the risk of frostbite, particularly within his prosthetic limbs.

“Mount Vinson will be especially hard in these conditions,” he said. “There’s a real risk of frostbite inside my prosthetics, which would be catastrophic.”

Despite the risks, Magar remains focused on his wider mission.

“I want to show the world there are no limits,” he said. “Anything is possible with the right mindset and the ability to adapt.”

If successful, he will become the first double above-knee amputee to complete the Seven Summits.

A Pride of Britain award winner and MBE recipient, Magar is using the challenge to raise funds for veterans’ charities including the Gurkha Welfare Trust, Blesma, Team Forces Course Foundation and Pilgrim Bandits.
