“Russian climber Iurii Sukhanov has become the oldest Russian to successfully summit Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak. He reached the summit at 5:55 A.M. (Nepali time) on May 15, accompanied by his guide Chatur Tamang, chairman of ChaTours Treks and Expedition Pvt. Ltd., expedition company.
At 70 years old, Sukhanov surpassed the previous record held by Ivan Dusharin, who summited Everest in 2012 at the age of 65 as part of the “Russian Trio.”
Sukhanov’s latest feat adds to an impressive mountaineering record. He previously summited Island Peak, and in 2018, he climbed Mount Manaslu. Most recently, in October 2024, he successfully scaled Ama Dablam. He has also conquered Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe—all with the support and guidance of Chatur Tamang.
A doctor and dentist by profession, Sukhanov took on Everest to mark his 70th birthday, demonstrating exceptional strength, resilience, and determination in high-altitude mountaineering.”

“After a long delay in getting started, Evan finally got underway at 3:45pm US East Coast time. He successfully made it to Camp 2 at around 1:15am US East Coast time. Making it to Camp 2 was his objective . He said it was dangerous going through the Khumbu Ice Fall, as a result of the crowding of other climbers at the choke points of ladders spanning crevasses and going up seracs. Anytime he was on the other side of those hazards he and his Sherpa guide Kyima made strong pushes to get past the other climbers. Impressively, they made it to Camp 2 in 9hrs and 50mins. The bulk of the climbers arrived to Camp 2 in about 15 hours. He is tired but feels good and is resting. Things are dynamic on the mountain and weather is not favorable to continue higher, as the wind is strong and there is a snowstorm coming . He is now hoping to attempt for the summit on the 19th .”
Dmitry Demchuk

“Worth remembering that acetazolamide (Diamox), the use of supplementary oxygen and dexamethazone are all banned by WADA.
Less than 2% of Everest summiters climb without the aid of at least one of these game changers… so the fact that xenon is banned in professional sport makes no difference to the mountaineering community.
I’ll say it now with 24hrs to go until we depart for the most audacious Everest expedition in recent years – traditional 8-9 week long Everest expeditions feel very ‘old fashioned’ now.
This is a new way of climbing 8000m peaks:
~ minimal environmental footprint
~ mitigating risk
~ maximising the likelihood of success
All whilst spending the shortest amount of time away from family and careers on a climate neutral expedition.
It’s not the only way to climb Everest – but this is innovation.
We can’t wait for tomorrow. “
